As the Portland Trail Blazers gear up for the new season following a tough 21-61 campaign, they’ve been exploring ways to reshape their roster. While they’ve already moved veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon, one name that has been consistently mentioned in trade rumors is forward Jerami Grant, who remains a prime target for a potential blockbuster trade.
Grant, 30, has been the subject of numerous trade talks, particularly with the Los Angeles Lakers, who are looking to bolster their lineup around superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis for another championship run. The Lakers see Grant as a key piece to solidify their roster, but negotiations have hit a snag, with the Lakers hesitant to part with more than one first-round draft pick. Meanwhile, Portland has been firm in asking for two first-rounders in exchange for their star forward.
However, there is still optimism that a deal could materialize. A recent proposal from Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report outlines a potential trade scenario where Grant heads to Los Angeles, and Portland secures a solid return package.
In this proposed deal, Portland would receive forward Rui Hachimura, guard Gabe Vincent, rookie guard Dalton Knecht, and a 2029 first-round draft pick. Given the size of Grant’s contract, which is set to pay him $29.7 million this season and will escalate to $36.4 million by the time he’s 33, this package might be the best return Portland could expect.
Hachimura, a young forward with potential, could serve as a long-term replacement for Grant. He is on a more affordable deal and could fit well with Portland’s rebuilding efforts. Meanwhile, Vincent, a veteran guard on an expiring contract, would provide leadership and flexibility. The Blazers could even explore flipping Vincent in another trade to acquire additional assets.
The most intriguing piece in the deal is rookie Dalton Knecht, whom the Lakers selected 17th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft. Initially projected as a lottery pick, Knecht slipped due to concerns about his age, but his talent and potential make him a valuable prospect for the Trail Blazers’ future.
For the Blazers, parting with Grant could pave the way for a younger, more financially flexible roster, while also securing future assets for their rebuild. Though no deal has been finalized, this trade framework presents a solid opportunity for Portland to move forward.
With time left before the season begins, both teams could still come to terms on an agreement that benefits both sides, possibly making a major impact on the Western Conference race.
