The Carolina Panthers have officially parted ways with experienced linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson, marking a major shift in the team’s defensive strategy. Announced on Tuesday, Chaisson’s release comes after the former LSU standout requested to leave, citing frustration with his role and opportunities within the team. His departure, just days before the Panthers’ season opener against the New Orleans Saints, has sent ripples through the organization as they prepare for the new season.
Chaisson’s Struggles in Carolina
Brought in during the offseason as a free agent after four years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chaisson was expected to bolster the Panthers’ pass rush, working alongside veteran Jadeveon Clowney. However, his time in Carolina was cut short after an underwhelming training camp and preseason performance. Despite high expectations, Chaisson failed to make the impact the coaching staff had hoped for, recording just one tackle in limited preseason action.
Once a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Chaisson’s NFL career has been plagued by inconsistency. During his four seasons with the Jaguars, he only managed to record five sacks, and the Panthers took a chance on him to provide much-needed depth and versatility on the defensive edge. Unfortunately, his inability to secure a more prominent role in Carolina led both parties to agree that it was time to part ways.
Panthers Turn to Youth on the Edge
With Chaisson gone, the Panthers now turn to younger, less experienced players to step up and fill the void. Second-year linebacker DJ Johnson, who has been receiving first-team reps throughout the offseason, is expected to take on a larger role. Johnson, a former Oregon standout, had a quiet rookie season but is seen as a key piece in the Panthers’ evolving defense.
Additionally, undrafted free agent Eku Leota has impressed during preseason play, earning him a spot on the active roster. Leota’s preseason performances, highlighted by his ability to disrupt plays, have caught the attention of the coaching staff, putting him in line for significant playing time. Jamie Sheriff, another undrafted talent recently claimed off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks, brings promise after recording three sacks during the preseason.
Panthers’ Pass Rush Relying on New Faces
The release of Chaisson opens the door for this untested group of players to rise to the challenge. Though they lack the experience Chaisson brought, the Panthers are banking on the energy and potential of their young pass rushers. Working alongside veteran Jadeveon Clowney, these emerging players will be tasked with getting after the quarterback and anchoring the defense as the team kicks off its 2024 campaign.
The Panthers’ upcoming matchup against the Saints, led by veteran quarterback Derek Carr, will be the first true test for Carolina’s revamped defensive front. It’s a chance for DJ Johnson, Eku Leota, and Jamie Sheriff to prove themselves and showcase their ability to fill the gap left by Chaisson’s exit.
