Shannon Sharpe has come to the defense of Indiana Fever rookie sensation Caitlin Clark, who has faced criticism despite her incredible debut season in the WNBA.
Caitlin Clark, along with Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese, has been a standout in the league, drawing millions of fans—and inevitably, critics. As the Fever make a late-season push for the playoffs, Clark’s record-breaking performances have sparked both admiration and criticism. However, Sunday’s 93-100 victory over the struggling Dallas Wings marked a significant milestone for the Fever, pushing them above .500 for the first time in five years and securing the sixth seed in the playoff race. Even legendary tight end Shannon Sharpe felt compelled to address the backlash against Clark.
On a recent episode of his Nightcap podcast with Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, Sharpe commented on the rough treatment Clark has received from opponents this season, noting the non-basketball plays and flagrant fouls she’s had to endure.
“She’s busting y’all’s ass,” Sharpe said of Clark’s dominant performances. “[She’s] doin’ the thing on them… She’s sharp on both sides, cutting ass left and right… Don’t be resentful of it. Embrace it.”
The Fever’s Resurgence
For the first time since 2019, the Indiana Fever find themselves with a winning record. Five years ago, the team started the season 4-3 but ultimately finished with a disappointing 13-21 record—a mark this current squad surpassed weeks ago. Even more impressive, the Fever started the 2024 season with a 1-8 record, only to turn things around dramatically after the Olympics.
Since the WNBA resumed play, the Fever have gone 6-1, winning games against teams that have already clinched playoff spots. With only three playoff berths still available, the Fever are making a strong push to solidify their sixth-place standing. Clark’s contributions have been instrumental in this surge, potentially leading the Fever to the playoffs in her rookie year—an achievement that could define her already historic season.
The Fever have nine home games remaining, giving them a significant advantage in their playoff pursuit. Besides Clark, Kelsey Mitchell has also been playing at an elite level, scoring over 20 points in seven consecutive games, including a season-high 36 points against the Wings. Clark added to the victory with a double-double, scoring 28 points and dishing out 12 assists.

For instance, Wings forward Satou Sabally remarked that it felt like playing a road game in her home arena due to the overwhelming presence of Clark’s fans.
