Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton is set to begin his rehab assignment, while the organization has also promoted their No. 3 prospect, Emmanuel Rodriguez, to Triple-A St. Paul as of Monday. Buxton has been sidelined due to right hip inflammation that forced him out of a game against the Kansas City Royals on August 12. He was subsequently placed on the 10-day injured list on August 15. In 90 games this season, the 30-year-old has posted a .275/.334/.528 slash line with an OPS of .862.
While Buxton has been out, Austin Martin has stepped in at center field. However, with Brooks Lee returning from the injured list this weekend, Willi Castro is expected to take over Martin’s spot in the outfield.
Both Buxton and Rodriguez are in the lineup for the Saints on Monday afternoon.
Rodriguez, the Twins’ No. 3 prospect and MLB’s No. 21 overall prospect, has been called up to Triple-A despite only playing 37 games at Double-A Wichita due to injuries. The 21-year-old recently returned to action after missing significant time with wrist and hand injuries.

In 167 plate appearances at Double-A, Rodriguez slashed .298/.479/.621 with an OPS of 1.100, with nearly 60% of his hits going for extra bases (22 out of 37). He has also scored 40 runs. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Rodriguez make his Major League debut next season.
Meanwhile, the Twins (74-62) are set to start a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays (67-69) at Tropicana Field on Monday night. Rookie right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson (5-3, 3.85 ERA) will start for Minnesota, facing off against former Twin Zack Littell (5-8, 3.89 ERA) for Tampa Bay. First pitch is scheduled for 5:50 p.m.
