The San Antonio Spurs are in a prime position to rebuild, boasting ample cap space, a stockpile of draft picks, and a young, generational talent to build around. While the Spurs seem inclined to take a patient approach to their rebuild, they’ve shown they’re not afraid to make bold moves when the opportunity arises.
In recent years, the Spurs have been linked to two-time All-Star Zach LaVine. Now 29, LaVine is under contract for the next two seasons, with a $48.9 million player option for 2026-27. Known for his scoring ability, LaVine’s defensive shortcomings and ball-dominant style have somewhat diminished his value in the league. The Chicago Bulls have been exploring trade options for LaVine for two seasons, but his hefty contract has made it difficult to find a willing partner.
In a complex mock trade proposed by Bleacher Report, the Spurs, Bulls, Phoenix Suns, and Los Angeles Clippers would engage in a deal involving nine players and four draft picks. According to the proposal, the Spurs would send Zach Collins to the Suns and Keldon Johnson to the Bulls, while receiving LaVine and an unprotected 2029 first-round pick from Chicago.
On the surface, trading two role players for an unprotected pick and a former All-Star might seem like a win for the Spurs. However, the trade comes with significant caveats. LaVine, who only played in 25 games last season due to a combination of injuries and being benched, has seen his star diminish. Over the past two seasons, he has averaged 23.5 points per game while shooting 36.9% from beyond the arc.
LaVine’s tendency to dominate the ball and his inefficient volume scoring might not be the best fit for the Spurs’ current roster, which prioritizes defense and ball movement. The team has been focused on developing young talent like Jeremy Sochan, with an emphasis on improving passing and team cohesion.
While the proposed trade might appear advantageous on paper, it could also restrict the flexibility the Spurs have carefully built. By taking on LaVine’s contract, the Spurs might close the door on future opportunities for more favorable deals or signings that better align with their long-term vision.
