Stanley Cup champion Tyler Johnson is heading to the Boston Bruins after the team reached a mutual agreement with the Tampa Bay Lightning. This move brings the 34-year-old superstar to Boston as part of a trade deal aimed at bolstering the Bruins’ lineup.

The Boston Bruins’ General Manager, Don Sweeney, officially announced that Tyler Johnson has signed a Professional Tryout Agreement (PTO) with the organization. In the press release, Sweeney stated:

“BOSTON – Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced today, August 31, that the team has signed forward Tyler Johnson to a Professional Tryout Agreement (PTO). The Spokane, Washington native was originally signed by Tampa Bay as a free agent in 2011.”

A PTO offers players the opportunity to prove themselves during training camp, with the chance to earn a spot on the regular-season roster.

Johnson, a 5’8″ center, brings with him a wealth of experience and a track record of success. Over his career, he has tallied 431 points in 738 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Chicago Blackhawks. Despite going undrafted, Johnson carved out an impressive NHL career, highlighted by winning back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Lightning.

Last season, Johnson posted 17 goals and 14 assists while playing alongside top prospect Connor Bedard on a struggling Chicago Blackhawks team.

The Bruins have been in search of depth at the center position following the retirements of franchise legends Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci after the 2022-23 season. While the offseason acquisition of Elias Lindholm was a significant step, adding Tyler Johnson further solidifies the Bruins’ centerline, making it a much stronger unit heading into the new season.
