Former Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Cavan Biggio has signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants, according to MLB transactions. This development follows his release by the Dodgers after being designated for assignment on August 5 to accommodate first baseman Freddie Freeman’s return from a family emergency.
Biggio, 29, will now continue his season with the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento, marking his third organization this year. His journey to the Giants comes after being traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Dodgers on June 12 in exchange for pitching prospect Braydon Fisher, debuting with the Dodgers the very same day.
During his stint with the Dodgers, Biggio appeared in 30 games, posting a .192/.306/.329 slash line with 14 hits, 11 runs, three home runs, and 10 RBIs. His final appearance for the Dodgers was on August 4, where he recorded a hit and an RBI in a 3-2 win over the Oakland Athletics.
With the return of Freeman, alongside stars Mookie Betts and Max Muncy, the Dodgers no longer required Biggio’s services. Before his time with the Dodgers, Biggio played 44 games for the Blue Jays this season, hitting .200 with two home runs and nine RBIs.
Originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Biggio made his MLB debut in May 2019 after a successful minor league career, where he was named MVP of the Double-A Eastern League in 2018. He enjoyed a strong rookie season with the Blue Jays, setting career highs in several categories.
Now with the Giants, a division rival of the Dodgers, Biggio faces a new challenge as he joins a team competing in the tight NL West race. While his departure may be a minor setback for the Dodgers, it is not expected to significantly affect their playoff chances as they continue to battle the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks for the division crown.
