As the NBA landscape shifts, speculation about star players seeking new opportunities inevitably arises, especially when their current teams face challenges. This is particularly relevant for Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. With Klay Thompson departing for the Dallas Mavericks in a sign-and-trade deal, the Warriors are now grappling with whether their roster remains capable of championship contention.
On a recent episode of Kevin Garnett’s podcast, KG Certified, NBA legend Paul Pierce weighed in on the Warriors’ prospects. Pierce expressed doubt about the team’s ability to contend, stating, “If you don’t have the personnel, you have to be realistic. They don’t have a championship team right now. The only way I see Golden State getting back to where they need to be is if they find a way to get Giannis [Antetokounmpo] over there.”
Pierce’s comment about potentially acquiring Antetokounmpo led to speculation from Garnett about whether Pierce had insider knowledge. However, Pierce clarified that he had no inside information regarding Antetokounmpo’s future and was simply sharing his candid thoughts. His perspective is grounded in the current state of the Warriors, who, even with Thompson last season, failed to make the playoffs after falling short in the play-in game against the Sacramento Kings.

Should the Warriors continue to struggle, Curry’s future with the team will inevitably be a topic of discussion. Despite the rumors, there has been no indication that Curry desires to finish his career elsewhere. Pierce suggested that Curry is likely to stay loyal to the Warriors, stating, “He’s going down with that ship. It’s all legacy for him now; everything is just icing on the cake. I saw Kobe [Bryant] lose in his final years, but he still went hard. That’s Steph. He’s committed to Golden State.”
Curry is under contract for two more years, following the extension he signed in 2021, which coincides with the recent extension of head coach Steve Kerr. Although Curry recently updated his social media bio, removing references to the Warriors, such changes are often more about personal preference than signaling a future move. Curry continues to perform at an elite level, as demonstrated by his contributions to Team USA’s gold medal win at the Olympics this summer. While fan theories about potential future collaborations with LeBron James and Kevin Durant persist, Curry’s commitment to the Warriors remains steadfast—for now.
