Good News: Cardinals Have Reached a Mutual Agreement with the 22-yr-old Linebacker In Exchange for…

The Arizona Cardinals have made a significant move, agreeing to terms with a promising 22-year-old linebacker in a bid to strengthen their defense.

With the injury to outside linebacker BJ Ojulari, who had an impressive rookie season in 2023 and was expected to reach new heights this year, the Cardinals found themselves in need of reinforcements. Ojulari’s torn ACL during training camp left Arizona’s edge rusher lineup dangerously thin.

In response, the Cardinals explored various options to fill the void. They initially signed Marquis Haynes Sr., but an injury led to his release shortly after. The team also considered Carl Lawson, who visited the Cardinals but ultimately did not sign a deal.

Fans have been vocal about bringing back Haason Reddick, but Bleacher Report identified another potential target: free agent edge rusher Tyus Bowser. With 19.5 career sacks to his name, Bowser could provide the boost the Cardinals need on defense.

“The Cardinals missed the opportunity to sign Carl Lawson, who was picked up by the Cowboys last week. That leaves Arizona in need of an edge rusher, and Bowser could be a suitable replacement if he’s healthy,” wrote Matt Holder of Bleacher Report.

Holder also pointed out that the Cardinals might look to free agency next offseason for a long-term solution, suggesting Chase Young as a prime candidate. Young, the former No. 2 overall pick, had a bounce-back season last year with 7.5 sacks, making him a potential target for Arizona, which is projected to have $81.2 million in cap space.

Bowser was one of the initial targets considered to replace Ojulari, as the Cardinals evaluate how to maintain a strong pass rush. While Zaven Collins and Dennis Gardeck have been sidelined during preseason, players like Cameron Thomas and Xavier Thomas have stepped up, showing promise in their recent performance against the Indianapolis Colts.

If the young linebackers on the roster continue to develop, the Cardinals may feel confident in their ability to pressure the quarterback without needing to bring in additional outside help. However, with draft capital and cap space available, the team has the flexibility to make a move if necessary.
