The Miami Hurricanes football team celebrated a significant achievement this week, with kicker Andres Borregales being named to the Associated Press (AP) Preseason All-American team.
Borregales was the sole Miami player to earn this prestigious honor, being selected for the second team on Monday. He was ranked behind former Alabama kicker Graham Nicholson, who recently transferred from Miami (Ohio). This marks the second time Borregales has been recognized as a second-team AP preseason All-American. ESPN also named Nicholson to their first-team preseason All-American list for 2024, with Borregales again securing a spot on the second team. Notably, Borregales is the only ACC player named to the second-team All-American.
From the ACC, North Carolina running back Omarrion Hampton, Louisville edge rusher Ashton Gillotte, Clemson linebacker Barrett Carter, and Florida State punter Alex Mastromanno were all first-team All-American selections. Miami is set to face Louisville on October 19 and Florida State on October 26, though they won’t meet Clemson or UNC during the 2024 season.
In 2023, Borregales delivered an impressive performance, making 22 out of 26 field goal attempts and 44 out of 45 extra point attempts, totaling 110 points. His accuracy was notable across various ranges, including a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals within 30 yards, 9-for-10 from 30-39 yards, 4-for-5 from 40-49 yards, and 4-for-6 on attempts beyond 50 yards. He also averaged 63.01 yards per kickoff throughout the season.
Earlier this summer, Borregales was named to the preseason first-team All-ACC for 2023 and included on the Groza Award Watch List. In 2023, he was honored as a first-team All-ACC selection and was a semifinalist for the Groza Award. He also received honorable mention All-ACC recognition in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Borregales is now just 21 field goals away from surpassing Michael Badgley for the Miami career record and needs 114 points to tie Badgley’s career points record. With Miami expected to have a more potent and explosive offense in 2024, Borregales has a strong chance to close in on these records.
In 2023, Borregales set career highs with 22 made field goals, 26 attempts, and 110 points. His previous bests were 17 field goals, 21 attempts, and 96 points, achieved during his freshman season in 2021. If he can replicate his 2023 performance, Borregales may cement his place as the greatest kicker in Miami history.
