1. Will the Ducks Secure the No. 1 Overall Pick?
The Anaheim Ducks find themselves in a familiar position—battling to stay out of the league’s basement while nurturing a roster full of young talent. Despite offseason additions like Brian Dumoulin and Robby Fabbri, the Ducks are still projected to miss the playoffs, which could be beneficial in the long run. A low finish would give them a shot at the first-overall draft pick, something the franchise has never secured.
General Manager Pat Verbeek is likely aware that his team isn’t championship-caliber just yet. So, while it’s not the most desirable situation, the Ducks shouldn’t be too disheartened if they end up near the bottom of the standings. Competing with divisional rivals like the Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks for that top pick, Anaheim will need some luck in the draft lottery. But if their young core continues to develop, the pain of another rebuilding year could lead to long-term success.
2. Can Cutter Gauthier Win the Calder Trophy?
One of the Ducks’ brightest young stars, Cutter Gauthier, is set to make a big impact in his rookie season. After forcing a trade from Philadelphia that sent defenseman Jamie Drysdale to the Flyers, Gauthier made his NHL debut last season, burning the first year of his entry-level contract. Now, all eyes are on him as he embarks on his first full season.
Gauthier’s college career at Boston College was nothing short of spectacular, with 38 goals and 65 points in 41 games. This success has positioned him as a strong contender for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the league’s top rookie. However, the competition will be fierce, with Flyers prospect Matvei Michkov and others like Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, and Logan Stankoven also in the mix. Gauthier has the talent to win the Calder, but it’s shaping up to be a closely contested race.
3. Can Trevor Zegras Silence Trade Rumors with a Strong Season?
Trevor Zegras entered the 2023-24 season with high expectations after two consecutive 60-plus-point seasons. However, injuries derailed his campaign, limiting him to just six goals and 15 points in 31 games. With a hefty contract averaging $5.75 million per year through the next two seasons, the Ducks need Zegras to bounce back in a big way.
Zegras has the skill to return to form, but if he struggles, trade rumors are likely to intensify. The Ducks have already shown a willingness to make tough decisions, as evidenced by the trade of Zegras’ former roommate, Jamie Drysdale.
