The San Francisco 49ers have been a dominant force since 2019, consistently competing at the highest level. Now, as they prepare for the 2024 season, they have a few rookies who might be ready to steal starting jobs.
Preseason games aren’t just for entertainment; they are crucial for rookies and depth chart players who are fighting to make the final roster. For these newcomers, it’s a “show up and show out” situation from the moment they step onto the field.
Football is a demanding sport, full of uncertainties that can leave holes in a roster if the right players aren’t in place. Transitioning from college to the pros comes with its challenges, but some players have that “It” factor, while others need to work extra hard just to stay relevant.
The level of talent entering the NFL is higher than ever, allowing teams to plug in younger players more frequently. This could be the case for the 49ers in 2024.
While the 49ers’ 2024 draft class may not have included many big names, there’s enough potential for some rookies to emerge as day-one starters. A lot can happen between now and opening day, but if everything falls into place, don’t be surprised to see a few young stars in the starting lineup.
Here are three 49ers rookies who could end up stealing a starting job in 2024:
1. OL Dominick Puni
Offensive lineman Dominick Puni, a third-round pick out of Kansas, made a strong impression in his pro debut. He held his ground well during the 49ers’ preseason game against the Tennessee Titans, especially as veterans Jon Feliciano and Spencer Burford were sidelined with injuries.
While it’s still early, Puni’s solid performance, combined with the offensive line’s struggles in 2023, has put him on the radar as a potential starter.
2. LB Tatum Bethune
Linebacker Tatum Bethune is another rookie making a case for himself. In his first live-action NFL game, Bethune recorded over six tackles and was involved in numerous plays. With veteran linebacker Dre Greenlaw expected to miss the start of the season due to an Achilles injury, Bethune has a golden opportunity to climb the depth chart and possibly secure a starting role.
3. DB Malik Mustapha
Safety Malik Mustapha is looking to capitalize on his momentum and earn a starting position. Mustapha has been drawing praise since before the preseason began, and his debut against the Titans showed why. His instinctual explosiveness allows him to play fast and physical, qualities that could make him a valuable asset in the 49ers’ secondary.
With safety Talanoa Hufanga still recovering from an injury, Mustapha could find himself in the starting lineup if Hufanga isn’t ready by Week 1.
The 49ers have their share of challenges and opportunities, but as these rookies continue to impress, the competition for starting spots will only intensify. Once the team resolves its lingering issues and focuses on the season ahead, the real excitement will begin.
