Matthew Judon’s tenure with the New England Patriots has officially come to an end, as the star linebacker has been traded to the Atlanta Falcons. Judon took to Instagram on Thursday to express his gratitude to the Patriots and to share his excitement for the next chapter in Atlanta.
“Thank you for everything, New England,” Judon wrote in his post, which featured photos from his three seasons with the team. “Atlanta, we ready.”
The trade was finalized on Thursday, following reports that surfaced the previous night. In return for Judon, the Patriots received a 2025 third-round pick, bringing to a close a prolonged contract dispute between the 32-year-old and the organization.
Judon, who was entering the final year of his contract, had been seeking a new deal. The four-time Pro Bowler had publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with his contract situation and reportedly had “animated” discussions with Patriots personnel during the team’s first padded practice of the preseason. Although Judon was present on the sidelines during New England’s preseason opener, he did not participate in the game.
Unable to reach an agreement and after watching several teammates secure contract extensions, Judon now heads to Atlanta for a fresh start. While it remains uncertain whether Judon will receive an extension with the Falcons, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported that a new deal is not currently imminent.
