Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze is taking extra precautions to prevent injuries as the 2024 season approaches.
As Auburn enters its second full week of fall camp, Freeze reports that progress is steady, but there are growing concerns about the intensity of practices. While he’s pleased with the team’s effort, the rough play has made him increasingly anxious, especially as the risk of injuries looms.
“It’s been a little too chippy and unprotective the last couple of days,” Freeze shared with reporters on Friday morning, ahead of the Tigers’ practice, as reported by Auburn Undercover. “I don’t know how to balance that. You could limit contact, but I’m not sure you can win in this league without having some physical practices during camp. It scares me to death, honestly, because we need to stay healthy.”
Freeze’s concern intensified after hearing about Texas Longhorns’ starting running back CJ Baxter, who suffered a season-ending knee injury during fall camp. This news has led Freeze to consider more protective measures for Auburn’s running backs, possibly having them wear no-contact jerseys during live practices.
Key players like quarterback Payton Thorne and linebacker Jalen McLeod are also likely to wear no-contact jerseys or have their live reps limited. As the team continues through fall camp, Freeze’s primary focus will be on striking a balance between productive practices and ensuring the health and safety of his players.
The Tigers are set to practice in Jordan-Hare Stadium this Saturday before hosting their preseason Fan Day at the Athletics Complex in the afternoon.
