Official Duke News: Duke’s Head Coach Jon Scheyer Announced the Signing of an Ideal Replacement for Mark Mitchel Heading Into…

In response to several departures via the transfer portal, Duke has taken decisive action by securing key transfers, including Maliq Brown from Syracuse. The 6-foot-8 forward from Culpepper, Va., is set to strengthen the Blue Devils’ frontcourt with his agility and strong team-oriented play. During his sophomore season with the Orange, Brown averaged 9.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 0.9 blocks per game while appearing in all 32 games. With Duke’s roster featuring six new freshmen, Brown, now a rising junior, is expected to provide both leadership and experience for the upcoming season.

Brown may serve as head coach Jon Scheyer’s immediate replacement for former Duke forward Mark Mitchell, who transferred to Missouri at the end of the 2023-24 season. Brown’s defensive prowess is evident; he was selected to the ACC All-Defensive Team last year. His stats back up this accolade—he led the conference in steals with 71, ranked 11th in rebounding, and placed 14th in blocked shots. Offensively, Brown is highly efficient, shooting 69.8% from the field last season, with most of his baskets coming around the rim.

Brown’s ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor is undeniable. His 6-foot-8 frame, combined with his athleticism, allows him to stretch through or around defenders, making him a constant threat under the basket. His instincts and awareness ensure that he is always in prime position to make a play, whether it’s collecting an offensive rebound or converting a contested layup.

Securing offensive rebounds and extending plays was a hallmark of former Blue Devil center Ryan Young, and this season, Brown is poised to bring that same tenacity. His defensive skills are equally impressive, as demonstrated by his ability to protect the rim with forceful blocks. Brown’s presence in the frontcourt will also be invaluable in helping freshmen like Patrick Ngongba II and Khaman Maluach develop their interior defense against tough in-conference opponents.

On the offensive side, Brown’s relentless approach to attacking the glass will be key to Duke’s success. He has shown a knack for fighting through defenses, often converting tough and-one opportunities or finishing with powerful dunks over multiple defenders. Brown’s all-around game and versatility make him a crucial addition to the Blue Devils’ rotation, and he is expected to play a significant role in Duke’s pursuit of excellence this season.
