Kendrick Perkins shared his thoughts on NBA Today about Victor Wembanyama’s future in the league. When asked how many NBA championships Wembanyama will win in his career, Perkins confidently predicted three. He elaborated that the heightened competition and concerns about Wembanyama’s longevity as a big man might influence his championship success.
“I believe he [Victor Wembanyama] will win three championships when it’s all said and done. It’s not gonna be easy, though. He’s still gonna share the league with Jayson Tatum, Anthony Edwards, Ja Morant, and these young bulls who are all aiming for the same goal.”
“But we have to consider his height—he’s 7’5″, right?—and how long his career will actually be. Historically, big men like Yao Ming didn’t have very long careers. So, how long will Wembanyama be able to dominate on both ends of the floor? That’s a question. But if he stays healthy, I see him winning three championships.”
Perkins makes valid points. While he mentioned young stars like Jayson Tatum, Anthony Edwards, and Ja Morant, it’s noteworthy that many of them are older than Wembanyama by at least four years. This highlights Wembanyama’s exceptional talent, as he doesn’t have many peers his age, except perhaps Chet Holmgren.
How Far Can Wembanyama Go in the League?
As Perkins noted, players of Wembanyama’s size typically don’t enjoy long careers in the NBA, at least not consistently. Shaquille O’Neal is a notable exception, playing nearly 20 years and remaining effective even in his later years. However, advances in sports medicine now allow players to maintain peak physical condition longer, as evidenced by LeBron James, who at 39 is still among the best in the world.

If Wembanyama can continue to elevate his game and build muscle, he could become the NBA’s most dominant player. He might follow Giannis Antetokounmpo’s path. Giannis entered the NBA with a slim frame but gained significant muscle mass to become a powerhouse.
Wembanyama had an incredible first season, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. He won the Rookie of the Year award and finished second in the Defensive Player of the Year race behind fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert. His stellar debut season sets the tone for what could be an extraordinary career.
