The Miami Heat face the challenge of replacing Caleb Martin, who departed in a surprising move over the summer. Martin joined the Philadelphia 76ers on a four-year, $35 million contract, turning down a more lucrative five-year, $65 million offer from the Heat. Now, Miami must find a suitable replacement to fill Martin’s versatile role.
One promising option is Isaac Okoro, formerly of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Okoro, a free agent, shares a similar build, skill set, and role to Martin. Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report highlighted Okoro as one of the best remaining free agents.
“Okoro is just 23 years old and coming off a season in which he shot 39.1 percent from deep,” Bailey noted. “With a 6-foot-9 wingspan and strong defensive metrics, his three-and-D potential is highly appealing.”
Okoro earned over $29 million during his four years with the Cavaliers, who selected him fifth overall in the 2020 NBA draft. Despite being eligible for an extension since July 2023, he has not re-signed with Cleveland, indicating either a desire to move on or unmet contract demands.
Similar Performance and Potential
Okoro, at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, mirrors Martin’s physicality and versatility. Last season, Okoro averaged 9.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 27.3 minutes per game across 69 games (42 starts) for Cleveland. Martin, in comparison, averaged 10.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 27.4 minutes per game over 64 games (23 starts) for Miami.
Both players are proficient from beyond the arc, with Okoro shooting 39.1% on 3.1 attempts per game and Martin hitting 34.9% on 3.6 attempts. Their defensive capabilities are also comparable, with Martin boasting a slightly better defensive rating of 113.3 compared to Okoro’s 114.9, both below the league average of 116.1.
The primary difference lies in their age. Okoro, at 23, still has room to develop, while Martin, at 28, is likely at his peak. This potential for growth makes Okoro an intriguing prospect for the Heat.
Negotiating the Deal
Given the current salary cap landscape, only the Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz can extend Okoro a significant offer. However, the Miami Heat are known for their adept salary cap management and player development. The team’s success, attractive location, and strong coaching staff make it an appealing destination for players.
Miami’s ability to meet Okoro halfway on contract terms could be crucial. The Heat could offer him a shorter-term deal, allowing him to improve his value and skillset while contributing significantly to the team. Okoro’s potential to provide 90% or more of Martin’s production makes him a valuable asset for Miami as they aim to maintain their competitive edge in the Eastern Conference.
