The Florida Panthers clinched their first-ever Stanley Cup championship with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 on June 25. As they gear up for the new season, they aim to defend their title and achieve back-to-back championships.
Barkov’s Leadership and Historic Impact
A key figure in their success is captain Aleksander Barkov, the 10th captain in Panthers’ history. Barkov’s leadership and performance have solidified his reputation as perhaps the best captain the franchise has ever seen, and he’s the first Finnish captain to hoist the Stanley Cup.
Record-Breaking Career
Drafted second overall in 2013, Barkov has been a cornerstone of the Panthers, consistently setting new franchise records. He leads the team in all-time regular season points (711), goals (266), assists (445), and power-play goals (75). His playoff performance is equally impressive, with franchise records for points (59), goals (19), and assists (40).
In the 2018-19 season, Barkov recorded 96 points (35 goals, 61 assists), the third-highest single-season total in Panthers’ history, only behind Matthew Tkachuk’s 109 and Jonathan Huberdeau’s 115.
Unique Honors and Awards
Barkov has also earned individual accolades unmatched by any other Panthers player. He won the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL’s best defensive forward in 2021 and again last season, making him the first and only Panther to receive this honor.

Barkov surpasses all previous Panthers captains in points, goals, assists, and games played. The only major category where he falls short is penalty minutes, where Paul Laus holds the franchise record with 1,702 minutes. Additionally, Olli Jokinen shares the record for most points in a game (six), and Pavel Bure holds the records for most goals in a season (59) and most goals in a game (four).
With his contract running through 2029 and a no-movement clause in place, Barkov has ample opportunity to break even more records and further cement his legacy.

This summer, Barkov celebrated the Panthers’ historic win in his hometown of Tampere, Finland. However, he remains focused on the future and is determined to achieve more.
“We won the Cup, the greatest prize, but you want to feel the same feelings again. That leaves you hungry,” Barkov said. “Winning the Cup helps us this coming season, but winning two in a row will no way be easy. It wasn’t easy to win this one, and the next win will not be easy. Everyone has to give it all, everyone has to play his best game, and of course, you need a little bit of luck. That’s what it takes to win the Cup.”
