The Milwaukee Brewers have confirmed the acquisition of right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas from the Cincinnati Reds in a trade announced Tuesday morning. In return, the Reds receive right-handed pitcher Jakob Junis, outfielder Joey Wiemer, and cash considerations.

Montas, 31, has a career record of 41-43 with a 4.05 ERA in 149 games (118 starts) across his time with the White Sox, Athletics, Yankees, and Reds. He brings postseason experience, having pitched for the Athletics in both 2020 and 2022. This season, Montas has a 4-8 record with a 5.01 ERA in 19 starts for the Reds.

The Brewers highlighted Montas’ standout 2021 season, where he finished sixth in American League Cy Young Award voting. That year, he posted a 13-9 record with a 3.37 ERA in 32 starts, ranking among the top five in the American League for starts, quality starts, innings pitched, ERA, strikeouts, and wins.

Jakob Junis, also 31, joined the Brewers as a free agent on February 7. He appeared in 10 games (one start) this season, recording a 4-0 record with a 2.42 ERA and one save. Junis missed 69 games due to an injury from April 6 to June 20.

Outfielder Joey Wiemer, 25, was selected by Milwaukee in the fourth round of the 2020 draft from the University of Cincinnati. He made his MLB debut last season, hitting .204 with 13 home runs, 42 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases in 132 games. This season, Wiemer has appeared in 19 games with the Brewers and has spent the majority of 2024 at Triple-A Nashville.
