The Pittsburgh Pirates have made a strategic move by signing 23-year-old right-handed pitcher Quinn Priester. Priester, a Pittsburgh first-round pick in 2019, is expected to bolster the team’s pitching lineup.
With the MLB trade deadline just a day away, the Boston Red Sox completed a trade to acquire additional pitching talent, aiming for future benefits. On Monday afternoon, the Red Sox traded infield prospect Nick Yorke to the Pirates in exchange for Priester. This deal was initially reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Priester, who was listed as the Pirates’ No. 4 prospect in 2020, ranked as high as No. 58 on Baseball America’s top-100 prospect rankings in 2021. Despite his impressive 3.41 ERA across several minor league levels, Priester has yet to fully prove himself in the major leagues. He has posted a 6.46 ERA in 94.2 innings over two seasons and was recently moved to the Pirates’ bullpen.
Nick Yorke, 22, was a first-round pick for the Red Sox in 2020 and has also appeared on Baseball America’s prospect rankings, listed as high as No. 31 prior to the 2022 season. In four minor league seasons within Boston’s system, Yorke has hit .277 with a .795 OPS. Since his promotion to Triple-A Worcester in June 2024, Yorke has shown significant improvement, hitting .310 with six home runs in 38 games, resulting in an impressive .898 OPS.
