During the ACC Kickoff event this week in Charlotte, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal lauded his quarterback, Cam Ward, calling him an “alpha leader.”
Speaking to the press, Cristobal highlighted Ward’s playmaking ability and resilience in overcoming negative plays. Cristobal emphasized that Ward has earned the trust of his teammates throughout spring practice.
Ward, ranked as the 14th transfer and fourth quarterback in the 2024 transfer portal according to 247Sports composite rankings, brings considerable experience to the team. Unlike the three quarterbacks ranked ahead of him, who have not completed a full college season, Ward has twice been named an honorable mention All-Pac 12.
Leading an experienced Miami offense, Ward is joined by returning leading receivers Xavier Restrepo and Jacolby George, along with fifth-year wide receiver Sam Brown, who transferred from Houston. The running back position will be bolstered by junior Oregon State transfer Damien Martinez and sophomore Mark Fletcher.
Ward’s presence at ACC Kickoff alongside Cristobal, linebacker Francisco Mauigoa, and offensive tackle Jalen Rivers underscores his role as a key leader. Mauigoa will lead the defense, while Rivers is the most seasoned player on Miami’s offensive line. Most of Miami’s offense will feature players in at least their third year of college.
Cristobal’s praise for Ward was clear: “What stands out is he’s an alpha leader. When we watched him on film, his playmaking ability was evident. He’s accurate, has great arm strength, can improvise, extend plays, and change the game. His ability to bounce back from a bad play and make things right is impressive. Throughout spring practice, he has gained the trust of his teammates.”
Last season, Miami struggled to recover from mistakes, ranking 108th with 22 lost turnovers. Ward, who threw 25 touchdown passes and only seven interceptions, also led the nation with seven lost fumbles. Miami’s offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson is confident in reducing Ward’s fumbles.
Ward’s leadership during adverse situations will be crucial for Miami’s ambitions of contending for the ACC Title and College Football Playoff. With a mostly new offensive group, Ward’s alpha leadership is expected to be a significant asset for the Hurricanes in 2024. His combination of skill and leadership is set to elevate the entire team, making him a vital part of Miami’s experienced transfer class for 2024.
