Latest Updates: Diamondbacks Have Reached a Mutual Agreement with Marlins for the 30-year-old Pitcher…

Diamondbacks and Mariners Eyeing Marlins Closer

The Diamondbacks and Mariners are reportedly among the teams showing interest in Marlins closer Tanner Scott, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. At least a dozen teams have expressed interest in Scott, with the Diamondbacks and Mariners now joining the Orioles, Dodgers, Phillies, Yankees, and Royals as known suitors.

Scott recently extended his scoreless innings streak to 17 2/3 frames during Miami’s 6-2 victory over the Brewers. This season, Scott boasts a stellar 1.18 ERA over 45 2/3 innings, along with a 28.7% strikeout rate. However, his 14.8% walk rate is one of the worst in baseball.

Despite his control issues, Scott has delivered excellent results as the Marlins’ closer for the second consecutive season. With Miami in seller mode and Scott becoming a free agent after the season, he is a prime candidate for a trade before the July 30 deadline. Naturally, several contenders are interested in acquiring his services.

Just two days ago, Arizona completed a trade with Miami for another left-handed reliever, A.J. Puk, in exchange for two prospects. Heyman’s report does not specify when the Diamondbacks inquired about Scott, suggesting they might have turned to Puk if the asking price for Scott was too high. However, considering Arizona’s bullpen struggles, they might still pursue Scott to further bolster their relief options.

Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen told reporters, including Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports, that the team could add more relievers and is focused on acquiring pitching before targeting position players.

“We’re still gonna stay engaged in every market; you never know when an opportunity is gonna come up,” Hazen said.

The Mariners, meanwhile, have been very active ahead of the July 30 deadline, acquiring Randy Arozarena and Yimi Garcia in trades with the Rays and Blue Jays, respectively. Similar to the Diamondbacks’ acquisition of Puk, Seattle’s addition of Garcia doesn’t rule out a move for Scott. However, the Mariners have a greater need for offensive upgrades than pitching reinforcements. Depending on their prospect depth and financial flexibility, Seattle might prioritize adding more bats over strengthening an already solid bullpen.
