The Seattle Mariners made a significant move late Thursday night, acquiring outfielder Randy Arozarena from the Tampa Bay Rays in a blockbuster trade.
Despite the team’s recent struggles and slipping out of first place, General Manager Jerry Dipoto, known as “Trading Jerry,” is likely far from finished. According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, Seattle remains active in trade discussions with the deadline just days away, focusing on bolstering their bullpen and adding another bat.
The Mariners have hit a rough patch, losing eight of their last nine games and recently being swept by the struggling Los Angeles Angels. This has left Seattle with a 53-51 record, one game behind the Houston Astros in a mediocre American League West this season.
More Deals Ahead for the Mariners Before the MLB Trade Deadline
Seeking bullpen help is a sensible move. Outside of closer Andrés Muñoz (1.35 ERA, 1.00 WHIP) and Tayler Saucedo (2.03 ERA, 1.28 WHIP), the bullpen has been a weak point. Ryne Stanek has a 4.38 ERA, and both Trent Thornton and Austin Voth have also underperformed.
Potential targets for Seattle could include Miami Marlins closer Tanner Scott and Drew Smyly of the Chicago Cubs, who would fit well in the Pacific Northwest.
Seattle’s lineup also has significant needs, particularly in the infield. The team recently designated Ty France for assignment, making first base a key area to address.
With the trade deadline fast approaching, expect more moves from the Mariners as they look to strengthen their roster and make a push in the AL West.
