The Milwaukee Brewers have made a strategic move to enhance their roster by signing experienced outfielder Braylon Payne. Selected as the 17th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, Payne has decided to forego his commitment to the University of Houston and embark on his professional baseball career with the Brewers.
Braylon Payne Signs with the Milwaukee Brewers
On Tuesday, July 23, Braylon Payne officially signed his contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, marking the beginning of his professional journey. At just 17 years old, Payne is one of the youngest players in this year’s draft but brings impressive credentials to the table. Known for his 70-grade speed, exceptional defensive skills, and developing hitting prowess, Payne is confident in his abilities.
“I can hit. I can run. I can track every single ball down. My power is still developing. As I get older, it’s going to get even better,” Payne stated.
Contract Details
The slot value for the 17th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft was estimated at $4.5 million. However, Payne signed with the Brewers for $3.4 million. By saving over $1 million in draft pool money, the Brewers hope to allocate additional funds to sign other promising prep players they selected.

Next Steps for Braylon Payne
Following his signing, Payne will complete the onboarding process with the Brewers organization and head to the team’s Arizona Complex. According to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Payne will not participate in any official games this year but will gain experience through live action in unofficial games. A realistic progression for Payne in 2025 includes starting in the Arizona Complex League and potentially advancing to Single-A with the Carolina Mudcats.
This addition is expected to bring significant depth and talent to the Brewers’ outfield, aligning with the team’s strategy to build a strong and competitive roster under manager Pat Murphy’s leadership.
