Two Key Areas Jimmy Butler Needs to Improve to Earn His Next Big Contract.
Jimmy Butler’s 2023-24 season can be summarized in one word: inconsistent. As Butler eyes a new contract, he must demonstrate that he remains a maximum contract-level player, as the Miami Heat’s success heavily depends on his performance.
1. Increased Offensive Presence
To secure his last big contract, Jimmy Butler must assert himself more in the Miami Heat’s offense. The Heat posted one of the lowest offensive ratings among playoff teams at 113, partly due to Butler’s passive play during the regular season. While Butler elevates his game during the playoffs, the current talent-rich league requires consistent effort throughout the entire season. There are no more easy games or guaranteed wins.
2. Improved Base and Advanced Stats
Last season, Butler’s base stats showed noticeable declines. He averaged his lowest points per game (20) and assists per game (5) since joining the Heat in 2019. His field goal attempts were also at their second-lowest since his rookie year (13.2). This decline might be more acceptable if he were getting to the free-throw line more often, but his attempts dropped to a career-low (7.7).
While regular box score stats don’t fully capture Butler’s impact, his advanced stats also saw a dip last season. His usage rate (24.0) was the lowest since he joined the Heat, and his assist percentage dropped significantly to 23.1%, a five percent decrease from his previous low of 28.1% in his first season with the team.
Additionally, his box plus/minus (4.6) was the lowest since his first season with the Heat.
