Good News: Gregg Popovich Received Double Boost as  Spurs Confirmed the Addition of Two Talented Stars…

The San Antonio Spurs have bolstered their roster by re-signing two key big men in free agency. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Spurs have re-signed center Charles Bassey. Additionally, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that San Antonio re-signed Sandro Mamukelashvili. Both players agreed to one-year, $2.2 million fully guaranteed contracts.

Consistent Contributions

Mamukelashvili and Bassey have both spent the last two seasons with the Spurs. In 65 games, Mamukelashvili has averaged 6.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. Bassey, in 54 games, has averaged 4.9 points, 5 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. Their return adds depth behind reigning Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama.

Sandro Mamukelashvili: “I Love Being [in San Antonio]”

After the 2023-24 season, Mamukelashvili, who became a restricted free agent, expressed his desire to stay in San Antonio. “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, but I love being here,” Mamukelashvili said after a home win against the Denver Nuggets. “I love being around the guys, connecting with them, learning, growing. I’m looking forward to the future and if it’s here, I’ll be very happy.”

Mamukelashvili finished the 2023-24 season strong, starting five of the final eight games. During this stretch, he averaged 11.4 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, shooting 47.25% from the field and 37% from three-point range. The 25-year-old has shown flashes of potential and is expected to be a solid role player next season.

Charles Bassey: Aiming to Bounce Back From Injury

Bassey appeared in the first 19 games of last season, gradually assuming a larger role before a season-ending ACL injury. In his final game, he recorded eight points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks against the New Orleans Pelicans. Bassey averaged 3.3 points and 4 rebounds per game while shooting 72.5% from the field.

With Bassey officially returning, it will be interesting to see how he integrates back into the team. Like Mamukelashvili, Bassey has demonstrated his skillset and potential during his time on the court.

Low-Risk, High-Potential Moves

Re-signing both big men to affordable contracts is a low-risk move for the Spurs. Following their second consecutive 22-60 finish, these offseason moves indicate a positive direction. In addition to Mamukelashvili and Bassey, the Spurs signed point guard Chris Paul, drafted guard Stephon Castle, and traded for forward Harrison Barnes.
