The relationship between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk appears to be deteriorating. Aiyuk, who has been a key player for the 49ers over the past four seasons, is demanding a significant pay raise. However, the 49ers seem reluctant to meet his financial expectations. According to Mike Florio, several teams were prepared to offer Aiyuk at least double his current salary.
Florio mentioned on Pat McAfee’s show this week that five teams were ready to offer Aiyuk $28 million per year. Aiyuk, dissatisfied with the 49ers’ stance, has since requested a trade out of San Francisco.
“There was a time before the draft when, as they were negotiating his value, his agent was allowed to see if other teams would pay him what he was seeking,” Florio said. “At the time, it was $28 million a year. It’s probably higher now as the market has changed. I’m told there were five teams ready to give him what he wanted, but they couldn’t reach a trade agreement with the 49ers.
“From the 49ers’ perspective, this is puzzling. You have five teams willing to pay him and offer you something in return; why not just pay him what he wants?”
Brandon Aiyuk’s Contract Situation with the 49ers
After a standout season in which he caught 75 passes for a career-high 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, Brandon Aiyuk has requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers. Over his four seasons with the team, Aiyuk has accumulated 269 receptions, 3,931 receiving yards, and 27 touchdowns.
Despite his impressive performance, Aiyuk has earned relatively little compared to his peers. His cap hit peaked last season at $3.99 million. This season, he is set to make $14.1 million, more than his earnings from his first four NFL seasons combined. However, Aiyuk, like many NFL players, is looking ahead to secure his financial future.

The 49ers have the option to use the franchise tag on Aiyuk for the next two seasons, keeping him under contract until early 2027, when he would be nearing 30 years old. The tag could be worth approximately $25 million in 2025 and $30 million in 2026, which ESPN’s Adam Schefter describes as a “weapon” in contract or trade negotiations.
“They have wanted to bring him back, but the wide receiver market has shifted, making it challenging,” Schefter said. “It’s harder to make a deal now than it was a few months ago. Aiyuk believes he deserves what the top receivers are getting, and the Niners have a specific price point in mind.”
Notably, Justin Jefferson, who was drafted three picks ahead of Aiyuk in 2020, signed a four-year, $140 million extension with the Minnesota Vikings in June.
