Good News: Twins Confirmed In Talk with Fans Favorite as Rocco Baldelli Seeks to Strengthen his Rotation at deadline…

Rocco Baldelli Aims to Strengthen Pitching Staff

The Minnesota Twins are actively seeking to enhance their pitching rotation as the trade deadline looms. With a second-half rental pitcher in their sights, the Twins hope this addition can elevate them to serious contenders this season.

Twins’ Current Standings and Performance

As of the All-Star break, the Minnesota Twins hold a record of 12 games above .500, sitting 4.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central. If the season ended today, they would secure the second American League Wild Card berth. The Twins have won 13 of their last 20 games, thanks to a strong infield led by Carlos Correa and sufficient pitching to stay competitive.

Targeting Yusei Kikuchi

The Twins believe that acquiring Toronto Blue Jays’ pitcher Yusei Kikuchi could be the key to their second-half success, according to Dan Hayes of The Athletic. The organization is particularly interested in a short-term rental to strengthen their rotation and enhance their postseason prospects.

Rotation Analysis

Minnesota’s starting pitchers have performed well overall, ranking top five in strikeouts (fourth), K/9 (first), and WHIP (fourth), and they have the 11th most fWAR at the All-Star break. However, their rankings drop to 15th in batting average against, 16th in WPA, and 24th in ERA.

Led by righty Joe Ryan and rookie Simeon Woods Richardson, the rotation has shown promise but also inconsistency and depth concerns. Woods Richardson has been impressive, with

a 3.51 ERA and 1.6 WAR in 16 appearances, but he has already pitched 82 innings this season, which could lead to fatigue later on.

Ideal Timing and Financials

Kikuchi, a former All-Star, is in the final year of his three-year, $36 million contract. Acquiring him would cost the Twins approximately $3 million for the remainder of the season. This short-term, financially manageable move aligns with the Twins’ strategy, avoiding the burden of a massive contract or long-term commitment.

Competitive Market

While Kikuchi is a desirable option, other pitchers like Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox and Jack Flaherty of the Detroit Tigers may also be on the market. However, the supply of impactful starters is limited, making it a seller’s market. The Twins might need to engage in a bidding war and offer a compelling package of prospects to secure Kikuchi.

Playoff Prospects

The Twins have an 81.6 percent chance of clinching a playoff berth, according to Fangraphs. To capitalize on this opportunity, Minnesota may need to sacrifice some of their farm system to strengthen the team. Without an upgrade at the trade deadline, their chances of making a deep playoff run are slim.
