Good News: GM Kyle Dubas Announced Big Boost to Mike Sullivan Roster with the Signing of a Sensational Star to a Multi-year Contract Worth…

Pittsburgh Penguins President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas has announced the signing of Harrison Brunicke to a three-year, entry-level contract. Brunicke was the Penguins’ No. 44 overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft held in Las Vegas.

Brunicke, an 18-year-old defenseman from Johannesburg, South Africa, is a highly coveted right-handed blueliner. He spent the 2023-24 season with the Kamloops Blazers in the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he tallied a career-high 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) in 49 games. Over his two seasons with the Blazers, he has accumulated 29 points. While his offensive stats may not fully reflect his capabilities, scouts believe Brunicke possesses significant untapped offensive potential.

Internationally, Brunicke represented Team Canada at the IIHF U18 World Junior Championship, contributing one goal and three assists for four points in seven games. He was a defensive stalwart, finishing the tournament with a plus-11 rating.

Standing at 6-foot-3, Brunicke excels defensively with his ability to deliver hard checks, control play around his net, and disrupt opponents with stick checks or hits. He is also adept at shutting down rushes and matching opponents’ speed. Once in possession, Brunicke makes smart decisions and is skilled at executing crisp breakout passes.

“There’s a ton of interest from teams looking for a big, right-handed defenseman who can play various roles,” wrote Daily Faceoff prospect analyst Steven Ellis in his final prospect rankings list. “He’s quite smart with the puck, and I feel his offensive abilities are better than his numbers suggest. With a 6-foot-3 frame, projectable traits, and some budding offensive potential, there’s a lot to like here – and a decent showing at the U-18s doesn’t hurt.”

Brunicke’s signing marks a significant addition to the Penguins’ roster, bringing both immediate defensive strength and promising potential for future offensive contributions.
