Good News: Duke Basketball Get Major Boost with a Well-Deserved Contract Extension…

Former Duke basketball guard and assistant coach Jeff Capel will be facing off against the Blue Devils for many years to come.

On Wednesday, Pitt basketball announced that Duke alumnus Jeff Capel has signed a contract extension to remain the head coach of the Panthers through at least the 2029-30 season. The 49-year-old Fayetteville, N.C., native agreed to a three-year extension.

Since leaving Duke’s now-retired legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski’s staff in 2018 to take the Pitt job, Capel has posted a 97-92 record. In 2023, he was named ACC Coach of the Year, and he finished as runner-up in the same race behind UNC’s Hubert Davis last season. His Panthers achieved a 22-11 overall record in 2023-24 but narrowly missed an NCAA Tournament bid. Over the past two seasons, they have compiled a 26-14 record in conference play.

“Brick-by-brick, he built a rock-solid foundation that has Pitt basketball poised for a championship future,” said Panthers athletic director Heather Lyke in a press release. “Jeff is an outstanding leader well beyond the court, and we are highly fortunate to have him representing the University of Pittsburgh.”

Capel’s basketball journey includes four seasons as a starter in the Blue Devil backcourt. After a brief professional playing career, he began coaching as an assistant under his father, the late Jeff Capel II, at Old Dominion during the 2000-01 season. He then joined the staff at VCU and became the head coach there in 2002.

In 2006, Capel took over as head coach at Oklahoma, where he remained until 2011 before returning to the Duke basketball program as an assistant.
