Jim Montgomery, born on June 30, 1969, in Montreal, Quebec, had an impressive hockey career. As a forward, he played four seasons at the University of Maine-Orono from 1989 to 1993. During his college career, Montgomery played in 170 games, scoring 103 goals and adding 178 assists.

Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 180 pounds, he went on to play 122 NHL games with five different teams, recording nine goals and 25 assists. He concluded his playing career in the UHL with the Missouri River Otters in the 2004-05 season.

Montgomery transitioned to coaching starting as a volunteer assistant at the University of Notre Dame during the 2005-2006 season. He then served as an assistant coach for four seasons at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. From 2010 to 2013, he was the general manager and head coach of the Dubuque Fighting Saints, leading them to two championships and earning the title of USHL General Manager of the Year twice.

In his subsequent role as head coach of the University of Denver men’s hockey team, Montgomery won the NCAA Division 1 Championship in the 2016-17 season and was named NCAA Coach of the Year.

Montgomery became the head coach of the Dallas Stars for the 2018-19 NHL season but was terminated on October 12, 2019. He then joined the St. Louis Blues as an assistant coach for two seasons before being hired by the Boston Bruins as their head coach. Under his leadership, Boston achieved the best regular season record in NHL history but suffered a first-round playoff upset to the Florida Panthers.

In his second season with the Bruins, Montgomery led the team to a second-place finish in the Atlantic Division and a second-round playoff loss to Florida. Montgomery has one year remaining on his contract as he heads into the 2024-25 season.
