The San Francisco 49ers are heading into the 2024 season with Super Bowl aspirations once again. With Brock Purdy playing in the final year of his rookie deal, the team has managed to maintain one of the most talented rosters in the NFL.
However, significant changes are expected after this season when Purdy will likely command a substantial contract. This context made it unsurprising that GM John Lynch selected a wide receiver in the first round of April’s NFL Draft, anticipating the challenge of retaining both Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel beyond 2024.
When the 49ers drafted Florida WR Ricky Pearsall at No. 31 overall, speculation grew about the futures of wide receivers Deebo Samuel and, particularly, Brandon Aiyuk, who is currently in a contract dispute as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. For now, there is room for all three, along with Jauan Jennings, who caught a touchdown pass in Super Bowl LVIII.
Pearsall has already shown his ability to contribute in multiple ways, a hallmark of San Francisco 49ers receivers. This offseason, the former Florida wide receiver has taken reps at various receiver positions and worked as a punt returner. In his senior season, Pearsall caught 65 passes for 965 yards and four touchdowns, while also returning 11 punts for 126 yards (11.5 yards per return).
“We’re getting him a lot of reps, trying a lot of different routes, and putting him in all the positions. We’ve been really impressed with how he’s started off,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said, via ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.
Pearsall had a strong showing at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, which boosted his draft stock. While he may not make an immediate impact, he is expected to contribute on special teams as a rookie. If Aiyuk or Samuel were to leave, Pearsall’s role could expand significantly.
“Pearsall has been exactly as advertised,” said ESPN’s Nick Wagoner after 49ers minicamp. “The Niners have used him at multiple receiver positions and as a punt returner, which is probably his best ticket to touching the ball early in his rookie year. The team wants Pearsall to be ready to step in anywhere in case of injury, and so far, he has shown plenty of versatility, according to coach Kyle Shanahan.”
