As the July 30 MLB trade deadline approaches, the Seattle Mariners have been actively pursuing trades for several impact players. A recent report suggests they are the favorites to acquire a specific young star.
Entering today’s MLB games, the Mariners’ once substantial lead in the American League West has shrunk to just one game. The surging Houston Astros have significantly closed the gap, and the defending champion Texas Rangers remain a formidable threat.
The tightening AL West race has increased pressure on Jerry Dipoto, the Mariners’ head of baseball operations, to make impactful moves before the deadline. The goal is to give the franchise its first serious shot at reaching the World Series in decades. It was recently reported that the Mariners have engaged in trade talks with nearly every MLB team. However, it appears they are nearing completion of one particular deal.
Seattle Mariners Reportedly Favorites to Trade for Jazz Chisholm Jr.
On Sunday, USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale revealed that “the Seattle Mariners are emerging as the favorites to land” Miami Marlins shortstop Jazz Chisholm Jr. The Mariners have been linked to the one-time All-Star recently, and word around the league is that he is highly likely to be traded before July 30.
The Mariners have struggled with production from second baseman Jorge Polanco this season. While Chisholm Jr. is primarily a shortstop, he can play multiple positions, including second base. Though his defense at shortstop has been inconsistent, he is expected to perform better at second base and would be a significant offensive upgrade.
Chisholm Jr. is under team control for two more seasons but will be arbitration-eligible in both years. This potential trade could provide the Mariners with the boost they need to solidify their lineup and make a strong push for the postseason.
