The Pittsburgh Pirates have made a significant move in the 2024 MLB Draft, selecting high school infielder/outfielder Konnor Griffin with the ninth overall pick.
Entering the draft with the ninth pick, the Pirates chose Konnor Griffin from Jackson Prep in Mississippi, considered the top high school player available. This marks the second time in three drafts that the Pirates have selected a high school player in the first round, the previous being Termarr Johnson. Both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America ranked Griffin as the ninth-best prospect in this year’s draft class.
Griffin has the potential to become a five-tool star, with his power being his most notable offensive weapon. Standing at 6’4″ and weighing 210 pounds, Griffin boasts impressive power potential and exceptional speed, having successfully stolen 87 out of 88 bases according to MLB Pipeline. He has the ceiling of a 30/30 threat.
Athletically, Griffin is capable of playing shortstop long-term, with both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America projecting him as a plus defender. He has been clocked throwing in the mid-90s from the mound, indicating more than enough arm strength for the left side of the infield. Additionally, Griffin has experience in center field, a premium position he could excel in with his speed and arm strength.
There have been some concerns about Griffin’s hit tool, as his swing can get long due to his large frame. However, he has improved his plate discipline, making better swing decisions. Both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline believe he can develop at least an average hit tool.
Griffin is a highly talented shortstop/outfielder, fulfilling the Pirates’ need for a potential long-term outfielder. With his power and speed, he has the potential to be a significant offensive threat. Even if his hit tool remains average, Griffin is expected to provide substantial impact in the future.
