As the NHL offseason winds down, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ president of hockey operations and GM, Kyle Dubas, is eyeing strategic moves to bolster the team for the 2024-25 season. Last summer, Dubas extended the offseason drama with the Erik Karlsson trade, but this year, he plans to take a different approach.
Dubas is not looking to spend future assets or tie the team to big-money, long-term contracts. With most top free agents already signed, the focus is on finding valuable additions without overcommitting.
The Current Free Agent Landscape
The frenzy of the free agent market has subsided, with over $1.2 billion spent and notable players like Steve Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault relocating. Nashville Predators GM Barry Trotz recently noted that most teams are finalizing their lineups, and the Penguins are in a similar position.
Despite the relatively full lineup, the Penguins still have a pressing need for additional offense, particularly in the top nine. If players like Valtteri Puustinen or Kevin Hayes don’t deliver 20-goal seasons, the team will need reinforcements. Injuries to key players such as Sidney Crosby, Bryan Rust, or Evgeni Malkin would also necessitate a strong backup option.
Potential Free Agent Target: Tyler Johnson
One standout free agent who could fill this role is Tyler Johnson. At 33, Johnson is not past his prime and has valuable experience, including two Stanley Cup rings from his time with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Despite his size (5-foot-8, 185 pounds), Johnson’s speed, hockey IQ, and leadership make him an attractive option for the Penguins.
Last season, Johnson scored 17 goals and recorded 31 points in 67 games with the Chicago Blackhawks, maintaining consistent performance from the previous season. His leadership with the Blackhawks’ youth movement was well-regarded, and he could bring similar benefits to the Penguins as they integrate younger players.
Other Free Agent Considerations
While other free agents like Kailer Yamamoto and Daniel Sprong are available, they don’t offer the same reliability as Johnson. Yamamoto had a standout season with Connor McDavid in 2021-22 but has struggled since. Sprong, a former Penguins draft pick, has been a journeyman and hasn’t consistently delivered.
Older veterans like James van Riemsdyk and Max Pacioretty, both 36, had unproductive 2023-24 seasons, making them less viable options. Given the limited pool of scoring talent in the UFA market, Johnson stands out as the best fit for the Penguins.
