Miami Football 2025 Class Moves Up with Four-Star LB Gavin Nix Commitment

The Miami football program received a significant commitment from four-star linebacker Gavin Nix on Monday evening.

Nix, a standout in the 2025 class, has propelled Miami’s recruiting class to new heights. With his commitment, the Hurricanes have moved up two spots to 15th in the 247Sports composite rankings, surpassing Michigan and Wisconsin.

Ranked as the 169th overall prospect, the 21st linebacker, and the 23rd player in Florida, Nix hails from the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton. He becomes the 15th commit in Miami’s 2025 class and the ninth since early June. Miami now boasts two highly-rated linebackers in this class, with Nix joining four-star LB Elijah Melendez.

Melendez remains the highest-ranked commit for Miami in 2025, with Nix following closely. Three-star LB Ezekiel Marcelin is also part of this impressive group. Additionally, Herbert Scroggins, classified as an edge rusher by 247Sports and On3, and as a linebacker by Rivals, adds depth to the class. Miami’s LB coach, Derek Nicholson, has played a crucial role in these successful recruitments.

Nix’s decision came after visits to Miami, Oregon, and Florida State in June. He had offers from 23 programs, most from power conferences, showcasing his high demand. With his commitment, Miami now boasts 10 blue-chip commits in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports.

During the 2023 season at IMG Academy, Nix recorded 42 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, 5.0 quarterback hurries, and 1.0 sack, playing for one of the nation’s most talented teams. He is expected to make an immediate impact as a freshman, especially with Miami set to lose key players like Francisco Mauigoa after the 2024 season.

Louisville transfer Jaylin Alderman, returning starter LB Wesley Bissainthe, and special teams standout Chase Smith will all be eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft. Miami’s 2024 linebacker class includes signees Adarius Hayes and Cameron Pruitt, with Pruitt projected to make the two-deep depth chart.

Nix told 247Sports that the consistency and dedication shown by the Miami coaching staff, particularly Derek Nicholson, played a significant role in his decision. The strong relationship he built with Nicholson, both on and off the field, was pivotal. Nix joins three other 2023 signees from IMG Academy, solidifying Miami’s connection with the elite football program.
