Reds’ Offseason Acquisition Set to Make MLB Debut After Nick Lodolo Lands on IL Again…

Another injury setback has hit the Cincinnati Reds as their best starting pitcher, Nick Lodolo, is heading back to the injured list. Lodolo, who has been a standout performer this season, will be sidelined with a blister on his left hand. This issue was evident during his last start, leading to his struggles on the mound.

Lodolo, boasting an 8-3 record with a 2.96 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 70 innings, has been the Reds’ go-to pitcher under manager David Bell. However, his placement on the 15-day IL is retroactive to June 24th, meaning he will miss at least two weeks of action.

In response to Lodolo’s injury, the Reds have recalled right-handed reliever Yosver Zulueta, acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays this offseason. Zulueta has been impressive with Triple-A Louisville, recording a 2.93 ERA in 23 appearances out of the bullpen for the Louisville Bats.

Zulueta is now set to make his MLB debut, providing a crucial addition to the Reds’ bullpen amid their injury woes. This development is another blow to the Reds’ playoff aspirations in 2024, as the team has already been plagued by injuries to key players like Matt McLain, TJ Friedl, Brandon Williamson, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand.

Lodolo’s absence will likely extend Carson Spiers’ stay on the active roster. Spiers performed admirably against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night at Great American Ball Park and is expected to start again later this week against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Additionally, Lodolo’s injury could prompt the return of Graham Ashcraft. The Reds optioned Ashcraft to Triple-A earlier this month, but with a vacancy in the rotation, he is anticipated to rejoin the active roster by Friday.
