The New York Yankees are looking to solve their offensive struggles by signing an experienced infielder. Despite being one of the top teams in baseball this season, the Yankees have encountered several issues, particularly within their infield, leading to a recent slump where they’ve lost 11 of their last 15 games.
The infield has been a significant concern for the Yankees. Anthony Rizzo, who has a .630 OPS this season, is sidelined with a fractured arm. His replacement, Ben Rice, has managed a .643 OPS. Second baseman Gleyber Torres (.646) and third baseman DJ LeMahieu (.467) have also underperformed, along with utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera (.623). The Yankees appear to lack internal solutions to their infield woes.
To address these issues, the Yankees are exploring the trade market for quality infielders, with Los Angeles Angels’ Luis Rengifo emerging as a potential target.
Luis Rengifo’s Potential Impact
Luis Rengifo has demonstrated power potential, capable of hitting 15-20 home runs annually. In 2024, he’s having one of the best seasons of his career, boasting a .317/.362/.446 slash line with six homers, 24 RBI, 11 doubles, 36 runs, and an .808 OPS.
Versatility and Speed
Rengifo offers more than just offensive prowess. He is a threat on the basepaths, with 21 steals in 27 attempts this season. His most valuable trait, however, is his defensive versatility. Rengifo can play second base, third base, shortstop, and both corner outfield positions. With some training, he could also provide coverage at first base, offering the Yankees numerous lineup solutions without sacrificing offensive production.
Trade Considerations
The Angels, currently struggling and one of the worst teams in the American League, may be open to trading Rengifo if the return in prospects is substantial. With Rengifo set to enter free agency after the 2025 campaign, now could be the ideal time for the Angels to maximize his trade value.
The Yankees’ pursuit of Rengifo underscores their commitment to strengthening their infield and addressing their offensive challenges as they push towards the postseason.
