The New York Yankees are considering bolstering their outfield depth at the expense of one of their top starting pitchers, according to a recent mock trade proposal.
Writers at The Athletic have suggested a mock trade where the Yankees would send left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes, right-handed pitcher Brock Selvidge, and shortstop prospect Roderick Arias to the Miami Marlins in exchange for center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., as reported by Kevin Hickey of The Sporting News.
The Yankees have been rumored to be open to trading Cortes for weeks. Although he has performed well in 2024, he has faced some challenges. With Gerrit Cole back from injury and Luis Gil playing at a high level, Cortes will be competing with Carlos Rodon, Marcus Stroman, and Cody Poteet for a spot in the rotation upon his return.
Selvidge, who was the Yankees’ No. 92 overall pick in 2021, has a 3.75 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP in Double-A, while Arias has 19 stolen bases and 43 RBIs in Single-A. Despite Cortes’ solid performance, including a 3.51 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 18 starts, his future with the Yankees is uncertain. Trading him along with Selvidge and Arias could yield a strong return, but it’s unclear if Chisholm Jr. is the right fit for the team
