Breaking News: Brad Treliving Discusses Roster Moves as Maple Leafs Secure $24 Million Superstar…
The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a significant move ahead of free agency, acquiring defenseman Chris Tanev from the Dallas Stars. This trade provides Toronto exclusive negotiation rights with Tanev as they aim to secure him on a long-term deal.
According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Maple Leafs are prepared to offer Tanev a six-year contract worth approximately $4 million per year. This move underscores Toronto’s strategic approach to bolstering their defensive lineup.
“Chris Tanev, traded from Dallas to Toronto at the end of the draft, was a target the Leafs pursued vigorously,” Friedman reported during a recent podcast. “It appears that Toronto’s offer aligns well with Tanev’s expectations, setting the stage for a positive outcome.”
Tanev, who recently concluded a four-year, $18 million contract with the Stars, is familiar to Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving from their time together with the Calgary Flames. Tanev’s experience and defensive prowess make him a coveted asset as Toronto aims to fortify its roster for the upcoming season.

“We identified a need to strengthen our defense,” Treliving remarked from Las Vegas, where the draft took place. “Acquiring Tanev before free agency opens was a priority for us. Now, we’ll engage directly with him to finalize terms and solidify our defensive core.”

Throughout his NHL career, which includes stints with the Vancouver Canucks, Flames, and Stars, Tanev has amassed 190 points in 792 regular-season games and contributed 13 points in 60 playoff appearances. His acquisition represents a strategic move by the Maple Leafs to enhance their competitiveness in the upcoming season.
As negotiations progress and free agency approaches, Toronto anticipates Tanev’s addition will bolster their defensive stability and contribute to their pursuit of postseason success.
