The Washington Capitals have secured a new top goaltender. During the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas, the Capitals acquired Logan Thompson from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for two third-round picks—one in this year’s draft and another in 2025.
The 2024 third-round pick originally belonged to the New York Islanders and was acquired by the Capitals in a trade involving Joel Edmundson to the Toronto Maple Leafs before the trade deadline. The 2025 third-round pick was originally Washington’s.
Thompson, who has spent his entire NHL career with the Golden Knights, entered the league through the New Jersey Devils system in 2019 and joined Vegas in 2020. He made a significant impact in the 2021-22 season following Robin Lehner’s injury and played alongside Adin Hill in the 2022-23 season, serving as the backup during the Golden Knights’ first Stanley Cup victory.

In 103 NHL games, Thompson has a record of 95-56-32, with a 2.67 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage, and four shutouts. He played in four games of the seven-game series against the Dallas Stars in this year’s playoffs, achieving a 2-2 record, a 2.35 GAA, and a .921 save percentage.
This isn’t Thompson’s first connection to the Capitals, as he played the 2019-20 season with their ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays. He is entering the final year of his three-year contract, with a cap hit of $766,667.
The Capitals needed this move to secure a second NHL-caliber goaltender after trading Darcy Kuemper to the Los Angeles Kings for Pierre-Luc Dubois.
