Done Deal: Just In Craig Berube Gets Major Boost as Leafs Confirmed the Signing of the 34-year-old Experienced Star with a Contract Worth…

NHL analyst and former player Carlo Colaiacovo believes that defenseman Chris Tanev will join the Toronto Maple Leafs in free agency. Tanev, who just completed a four-year, $18 million contract, is one of the top defensemen available.

During his FirstUp radio show on TSN1050, Colaiacovo stated, “I firmly believe Chris Tanev will be a Toronto Maple Leaf on July 1. The Leafs have been eager to acquire him, and he’s a Toronto native who wants to play here. Last year, despite offering a first-round pick, Calgary wasn’t willing to trade him. I believe he will be the Leafs’ top target in free agency.”

Tanev is known for his strong defensive play, including blocking 207 shots last season with the Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars, and 73 more in 19 playoff games with the Stars. His addition would greatly strengthen the right side of Toronto’s defense.

Colaiacovo also speculated on Tanev’s potential contract, suggesting that if it’s a five-year deal, it might be around $4-5 million per year. For shorter deals, the salary could rise to $5-6 million per year. “He’s the right-handed defenseman the Leafs need, fitting the style that both Craig Berube and Brad Treliving want.”

Last season, Tanev recorded 2 goals and 17 assists in 75 regular season games. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman also indicated that Tanev is the Maple Leafs’ top target, noting that Treliving, who previously signed Tanev with the Flames, is a big fan of his game and character.

With over $18.8 million in cap space, Toronto is well-positioned to make this signing happen.
