The Dallas Stars have signed defenseman Alexander Petrovic to a two-year, two-way contract, as announced by General Manager Jim Nill. This contract will take effect for the 2024-25 season.
Petrovic, primarily an AHL defenseman, hails from Edmonton, Alberta. He began his professional career in March 2012 and has played in 427 AHL games. Over nine seasons with teams such as the San Antonio Rampage, Providence Bruins, Stockton Heat, and Texas Stars, he has accumulated 151 points (32 goals, 119 assists), 453 penalty minutes, nine game-winning goals, and a plus-37 rating.
During the 2023-24 season, Petrovic scored 22 points (five goals, 17 assists) in 70 regular-season AHL games and added one goal in seven Calder Cup Playoff appearances. Following the AHL season, he joined Dallas, playing his first Stanley Cup Playoff game since 2016.

The 32-year-old stepped up in the second round against the Colorado Avalanche, playing seven games and averaging over 12 minutes of ice time per game. While he didn’t record any points, he finished with a plus-1 rating.
In his NHL career, Petrovic has notched 50 points (five goals, 45 assists) in 264 regular-season games over nine seasons. He debuted in the NHL with the Florida Panthers in 2013, spending his first seven seasons there.
After being traded to the Edmonton Oilers at the 2019 trade deadline for a third-round draft pick and defenseman Chris Wideman, Petrovic played nine games with the Oilers. He later signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, and eventually the Stars, mainly playing in the AHL until his call-up to Dallas for one game in 2023-24.
Originally drafted by the Florida Panthers in the second round (No. 36) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Petrovic continues to bring depth and experience to the Stars’ defense.
