Brandon Aiyuk has hinted at his potential teams for 2024, mentioning the 49ers, Commanders, or Steelers as possibilities.
Contract Negotiations with the 49ers
The offseason has been rife with speculation about the contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and star receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The situation has become increasingly public, raising questions about where things went awry.
Aiyuk recently addressed the issues on The Pivot, where he explained how discussions with the 49ers have evolved. In a video posted by Aiyuk’s girlfriend, he was seen telling Washington Commanders quarterback and friend Jayden Daniels that the 49ers weren’t interested in keeping him.
What Went Wrong?
Aiyuk shared that the 49ers expressed doubts about their alignment. “They told me that they didn’t believe we were on the same page,” Aiyuk said. “That’s part of contract negotiations—trying to sway things in either direction.”
Earlier in the offseason, Aiyuk and the 49ers had positive discussions, with Aiyuk feeling close to signing an extension. “There were times when I was telling my agent to get my suit ready,” he recalled.
The Changing Market
Initially, Aiyuk was eager to secure a deal without concern for market fluctuations. “I was back and forth with [the 49ers] daily,” he said. However, as the wide receiver market surged with big deals for top players, negotiations stalled.
“The market changed, and I wasn’t able to get a deal done before that,” Aiyuk explained. Despite ongoing discussions, the two sides have struggled to find common ground.
Current Status
Recently, Aiyuk mentioned that talks have been more positive, and he plans to work out at the 49ers facility, indicating a potential shift in negotiations as training camp approaches. He highlighted the complexities of the changing market and how it affected their discussions, but the 49ers have yet to meet his demands.
As Aiyuk looks forward, he remains optimistic about his options, including the possibility of staying with the 49ers or exploring opportunities with the Commanders or Steelers.
