Despite the presence of former five-star recruit Arch Manning, Quinn Ewers remains the undisputed starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns.
Since transferring from Ohio State before the 2022 season, Ewers has faced challenges, including injuries, but when healthy, he’s proven to be one of the top quarterbacks in the country. In 2023, Ewers threw for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns, and only six interceptions, leading Texas to the final four-team College Football Playoff.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian recently emphasized to ESPN (h/t On3) that Ewers’ greatest asset isn’t just his talent, but his leadership.
“Without question, the area that stands out the most is his leadership,” Sarkisian said. “This is his team.”
Entering his third year in Sarkisian’s program, Ewers carries high expectations not only for himself but for the Longhorns as a whole. Texas is not just expected to make the College Football Playoff, but they also have a strong chance to compete for the national championship in 2024.
Ewers’ journey from a young transfer to the established leader of Texas football has earned him respect and trust within the team. Sarkisian noted, “This offseason, this year, he is much more vocal, much more in command of what we’re doing, and has earned our trust, quite frankly, to get us in and out of some things. Just his command and his leadership with a lot of new receivers. You definitely see that.”
As Texas transitions to the SEC, Ewers’ leadership will be crucial, especially early in the season. The Longhorns face Michigan in Week 2 and will have their SEC debut on September 28 against Michigan State.
