The Atlanta Braves, plagued by injuries, are in urgent need of outfield reinforcements. A potential solution might be trading for Los Angeles Angels outfielder Taylor Ward, as suggested by Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter on June 27.
Reuter’s proposal involves the Braves acquiring Ward in exchange for their No. 4 prospect, JR Ritchie, and right-handed pitcher Allan Winans.
The Braves’ outfield situation has become critical with Ronald Acuna Jr. sidelined for the season and Michael Harris II expected to miss significant time due to a hamstring strain. Ward, with a 116 OPS+ and 14 home runs over 76 games this season, could offer the stability they need.
Ward, 30, has had one full season in the majors, playing 135 games for the Angels in 2022 and hitting .281 with 23 home runs. However, his 2023 season was disrupted by a facial injury from a hit-by-pitch, limiting him to 97 games.
Angels’ Position on Trading Ward
While Ward could be a valuable trade asset for the Angels, they are not compelled to trade him. Ward is under club control through 2026, and the Angels may wait for the right offer. Given his performance and the team’s need for a rebuild, trading him now could be beneficial.
Ward is earning a manageable $4.8 million this year and has two more arbitration-eligible seasons. Though he’s a solid player, the Angels might prefer to capitalize on his current value rather than building around him long-term.
Potential Braves’ Offer
To acquire Ward, the Braves would have to part with JR Ritchie, the 35th overall pick in the 2022 draft. Ritchie, despite recently returning from Tommy John surgery, has significant potential with four plus pitches and good command. His recovery means he has limited innings this season but also that he’s past the surgery at a young age.
Allan Winans, the other player in the proposed trade, could join the Angels’ pitching staff immediately. Though his major league experience is limited and his performance for the Braves has been inconsistent, he provides immediate depth.
