Breaking: Miami Football Set to Secure Another Experienced Linebacker

The Miami football program continues its successful streak with linebacker recruits, highlighted by recent official visits.

Three-star prospect Ezekiel Marcelin’s commitment on Saturday marks the Hurricanes’ second linebacker pledge in the past month. This follows four-star linebacker Elijah Melendez reaffirming his December commitment to Miami on Sunday after his official visit.

In addition to Marcelin and Melendez, Miami hosted Gavin Nix and Eric Winters for official visits. Nix is leaning towards Miami, while Winters committed to Auburn earlier this month. Miami will need to fill gaps left by Francisco Mauigoa after the 2024 season, with Wesley Bissainthe and Chase Smith eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft.

Eric Winters, the highest-ranked among the visiting linebackers, is listed as both a linebacker and safety by 247Sports and primarily as a safety by On3. Winters is ranked 65th overall, 7th among safeties, and 5th in Alabama according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He visited Miami, Georgia, Florida State, and Auburn before committing to Auburn on June 15, shortly after his visit. National Recruiting Analyst Cooper Petagna projects Winters as a safety likely to play close to the line of scrimmage.

Gavin Nix visited Miami on June 7, followed by Oregon on June 14, and Florida State a week later. Gaby Urruta of Inside logged a crystal ball prediction for Nix to Miami on June 12. On3 projections give Miami a 31.3 percent chance of landing Nix, followed by Florida and Florida State.

Elijah Melendez took official visits to Auburn, Mississippi, and Oklahoma before his final stop at Miami. After his visit, Melendez reaffirmed his commitment to Miami, stating he is “1000 percent” a Hurricane in a social media post. Melendez is ranked 135th overall, 16th among linebackers, and 20th in Florida for the 2024 class.

Ezekiel Marcelin, before committing to Miami, took official visits to Pittsburgh, Louisville, and Stanford, as reported by On3. Marcelin is ranked 450th overall, 47th among linebackers, and 61st in Florida for the 2025 class. His commitment has moved Miami up to 33rd in the 247Sports composite rankings.
