Breaking: Sean Payton Confirms Major Setback with Worrying Updates for the Broncos Ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft
In an unfortunate turn of events for the Denver Broncos, troubling updates have emerged regarding quarterback Zach Wilson as the team heads into training camp.
The Broncos acquired Zach Wilson from the New York Jets in a pre-draft trade, exchanging late-round picks. Given Wilson’s disappointing performance over three seasons with the Jets, Denver’s expectations were modest for the former No. 2 overall pick. This became even more apparent when the Broncos used their first-round draft pick on Oregon quarterback Bo Nix.
As the Broncos concluded their mandatory minicamp, reports surfaced about Wilson’s struggle to secure his position. According to The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider, Wilson is trailing in the competition to become the No. 2 quarterback behind veteran journeyman Jarrett Stidham. This sentiment is echoed by other sources.
Is Zach Wilson at Risk of Not Making the Roster?
It’s still early to make definitive conclusions, but Wilson’s history with the Jets combined with recent reports raises the possibility. During his three years in New York, Wilson started 33 games, posting a 12-21 record, with 23 touchdowns against 25 interceptions, averaging 185 yards per game. This performance has labeled him as one of the most significant draft busts in recent NFL history.
The Broncos’ Quarterback Situation
Currently, Bo Nix appears to be the frontrunner for the starting quarterback position. Head coach Sean Payton has been highly impressed with Nix, commenting in May, “It’s been exactly what we saw. The only surprise was his size when we worked him out privately. He’s doing well.”
Jarrett Stidham, who played in three games for the Broncos last season, also seems to have an advantage. If the Broncos decide to keep only two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, Zach Wilson could indeed find himself on the outside looking in.
The coming weeks will be crucial for Wilson as he strives to prove his worth and secure a spot on the Broncos’ roster.
