Geno Smith, the Seattle Seahawks’ 2024 starting quarterback, has expressed frustration with recent NFL rankings. Analyst Chris Simms, formerly of the Buccaneers and now with NBC, placed Smith at a modest 19th among the league’s top 40 quarterbacks this year.
This ranking has sparked controversy among fans nationwide, with accusations that Simms may have unfairly favored other quarterbacks over Smith. Notable placements on Simms’ list include Trevor Lawrence at 11th, Jordan Love at 13th, and Aaron Rodgers at 14th. Surprisingly, Brock Purdy, who played in a Super Bowl, landed 17th, while rookie Caleb Williams claimed the 20th spot ahead of several seasoned names.
For Smith, this isn’t unfamiliar territory. Last year, Simms ranked him 15th, indicating a cooling interest in the quarterback. With Pete Carroll’s departure and new leadership for the Seahawks this season, Smith has a chance to redefine his worthiness for the team. Despite having two seasons left on his contract according to Spotrac, the Seahawks could opt to move on from Smith financially this year.
Smith’s NFL journey began over a decade ago with the New York Jets, where he was initially seen as a franchise quarterback but faced challenges. After stints with multiple teams, including backing up Russell Wilson in Seattle, Smith stepped up when Wilson was injured in 2021. He notably threw 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, helping the team to nine victories.
The subsequent season saw Smith’s numbers dip slightly, setting the stage for a crucial 2024 campaign. The question now is whether Smith can deliver another surprising performance this year.
