The Bucks made a significant move in the 2023 offseason by acquiring Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers, which came at the cost of mortgaging their future. With limited flexibility, GM Jon Horst faces challenges in bringing in new talent without trading Lillard away.
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, bench depth is the team’s most pressing need, alongside ensuring Khris Middleton consistently performs at his playoff level throughout the regular season. “The playoff version of Middleton and bench depth. Middleton averaged a playoff-career-high 26.2 points but played in only 55 regular-season games, averaging 27.2 minutes and 15 points,” Marks noted.
Middleton’s health is a significant factor in addressing these needs. His frequent absences during the season disrupted the team’s chemistry and cohesion. Ensuring he can play more than 27.2 minutes per game and contribute more than 15 points regularly would alleviate some pressure on the roster.
Moreover, Middleton’s availability directly impacts the bench. When he’s sidelined, someone from the second unit has to step up, straining the team’s already limited depth. Developing younger players like AJ Green, MarJon Beauchamp, and Andre Jackson will be crucial, as will effectively utilizing their two picks in the 2024 NBA Draft at Nos. 23 and 33.
Alternatively, the Bucks could use their draft capital, including a 2031 first-round pick, to orchestrate a trade on draft night. With Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo on the roster, the team remains in win-now mode, making strategic moves essential for maintaining their competitive edge.
